All of a sudden, the Burlington Braves are just another team after an Ontario Football Conference title. The OFC champs & national finalists lost 32-20 to the Fratmen

The Braves will attempt to even their record this Saturday (Aug. 29) when they host the newest entry in the expanded six-team loop, the Ottawa Sooners, at Nelson Stadium at 7 p. m.

Sunday, both teams had three touchdown efforts from their quarterbacks, but Burlington’s new pivot Zack Stacey, back from a two-year stint as a receiver with the University of Guelph Gryphons, added two interceptions as well.

“It was a weird game,” said Braves coach Craig Davoren. “We gave up some big plays, they beat us on special teams and we turned the ball over, but one of Stacey’s interceptions wasn’t his fault at all.”

Stacey was 17 for 30 for 270 yards, all three TD receptions going to recent addition Matthew Scott, who pulled in five passes for 125 yards including a 65-yard major.

Windsor QB Ricky Simons hit WR Mike Ingratta on three TD passes, part of a 13 for 21 performance for 260 yards. Ingratta finished with 122 yards on seven receptions.

Scott, from Mississauga, joined the Braves last week. He was on the Bishop’s University Gaiters roster last year. Davoren had him playing several positions and liked what he saw.

“He didn’t even start the game,” said Davoren. “Once he was in there, though, he got open.

”The Braves’ running game was almost non-existent, with Stacey picking up 26 yards on six carries and running back Evan Thompson adding 10 more on eight attempts.

“They ran a 3-4 defence and we weren’t expecting that,” said Davoren. “They were also really aggressive on the blitz, which is why we could pass the ball.”

The Fratmen managed 86 yards on the ground but couldn’t maintain a four-yard average on the day.

Fullback Ricky Savage, unavailable in Week 1, will be in the lineup against the Sooners. The West Lincoln athlete can play fullback, tailback and the linebacker position, and is a wedge breaker on special teams.

“We’ll have a few new guys on the weekend,” said the coach, fresh from watching tape of the Sooners’ 41-14 victory over the Hamilton Hurricanes.

“They did a number on Hamilton,” he said. “They’re a fundamentally good team.”
